25 July, 2012

Juan Calderón, one of the group´s FPI (“Formación del Personal Investigador”) students, has recently graduated from the Cambridge Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics achieving honors with Merit.

The master offers a wide variety of lectures on mathematics and theoretical physics. The classes are taught by leading scientists such as J.D.Barrow and Michael Green. Some of Juan's courses were General Relativity, Black holes, String Theory, Cosmology, and Symmetries and Particles. His master essay was 'Global embeddings and their applications to black hole thermodynamics'.

Currently, Juan is a graduate student at UIB with Alicia Sintes as his advisor, where he works on gravitational wave detectors data analysis and simulations. Last year he was awarded a FPI grant by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, one of the most prestigious at the graduate level. It is also highly competitive - there are only 32 grants for Physics students from all over the country. FPI grants provide funding for 4 years.

Other highlights of Juan's academic career are being the leader of the Science Section of the Spacial Project THESEUS (T-Tauri & HErbig Ae/Be stars Study with Echelle Uv Spectrograph), winner of the Alpbach Summer School 2011 organized by the ESA (European Space Agency) and a scientific stay in the prestigious German Research Institute GSI. He has also attended several international schools in France and Spain.

Congratulations, Juan!
