Leïla Haegel, from the University Paris-Sud XI, is doing an internship in our group

Leïla Haegel, a French female master student, arrived in May to UIB to do an internship for three months within our group.

Currently, Leïla is doing the "Master 2 in Nuclei, Particles, Astroparticles and Cosmology" at the University Paris-Sud XI, specializing in cosmology and particle physics.

Here in our group, she is working on large scale numerical simulations of binary systems of black holes, computing the gravitational wave signal, and studying how to make these results useful for gravitational wave data analysts. She has learnt to run such simulations on MareNostrum, the most powerful supercomputer in Spain, analyzing results, and some of the general relativity and numerical algorithms behind the simulations.

Leïla has not oficially an adviser in Paris. Instead of that, there is a jury of several researchers for internships: Sébastien Descotes-Genon, Anne-Marie Lutz, Iolanda Matea, Mathieu Langer and Frédéric Fleuret. Here in the UIB, her advisor is Sascha Husa, member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration and spokesperson for the international collaboration "Ninja II".

On May 16, 2013, Leïla gave a very interesting seminar on "Neutrino physics: from beta decay to new astronomy". Members of our group and of the Physics Department, as well as several students, attended and enjoyed the talk.

Other highlights of Leïla's academic career are an internship in the IPHC laboratory of Strasbourg on the OPERA experiment (neutrino physics) and another one at the University of Geneva (on a next-generation of colliders).

The next step in Leïla's career is her PhD in the Neutrino group of the University of Geneva.
