The Researchers of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration - the researchers of the Relativity and Gravitation Group of the University of the Balearic Islands among them - have recently been awarded with two outstanding international awards, the Gruber Cosmology Price and the special Breakthrough Price in fundamental physics, for having carried out the first direct detection of gravitational waves.

The Gruber Cosmology Price is awarded by the Gruber Foundation, of the University of Yale, and is dotated with fifty thousand dollars.

The special Breakthrough Price of fundamental physics is awarded by the Milner Foundation and is dotated with three million euros, to be distributed among the founders of LIGO, Ronald W. P. Drever, Kip S. Thorne and Rainer Weiss, and the 1,012 researchers who authored the article about the discovery.
